Modern people are in an era of information explosion, receiving extraneous messages in every moment from the outside world. In this case, to have a relatively independent private space is particularly valuable.

| DESIGN PURPOSE

Public space means a social space that open and accessible to people. Every day, we are in a wide range of public areas, like parks, square, office, traffic station.

Private space refers to a small area that belongs to oneself; the individual can experience comfort, security in such a space, or just as a place to be alone. However, with the development of the society, we are surrounded by new things continually pouring out, the time for personal communication or independent thinking is decreasing In such an era of rapid contraction of own space, the relationship between public space and private space has become very delicate.

| RESEARCH

Although public space has its unique openness, people in this area still have different levels of special needs. Transparency does not mean that people do not need privacy. I hope that through the design of private space in public space, I hope I can learn more about the relationship between people and the environment.

According to proxemics (Edward T. Hall), the interpersonal distances of man (the relative distances between people) in four distinct zones:

(1) intimate space

(2) personal space

(3) social space

(4) public space.

However, private space is the subjective definition of a person's area and can not be determined solely from a distance.

The size of the space, population density, and even the senses will all influence the individual's judgment on the scope of the private area.

The privacy in traditional Chinese furniture

In traditional oriental architecture, the concept of "wall" is fragile. In contrast, soft insulation such as screens and curtains are heavily used in buildings. Screens and curtains are conceptual walls, creating a sense of the level of interior space.

Users and furniture

Furniture was initially created to meet the diverse needs of humankind. At the same time, furniture is also given emotional significance as an item closely related to people's lives.

Therefore, this design will use furniture as a carrier to show people's potential demand for privacy...

So, I wanted to design a set of furniture...

1. Create privacy by visually blocking

2. Explore the relationship between people, products, space

3. Extract Chinese culture, create a unique style

PINGYI

Pingyi is different from ordinary chairs, the armrest is unilateral, and the other side is a curtain-style screen. It hides people and creates a relatively independent but somewhat breathable one.

- Ping | 屏 -

In Chinese, Ping means to protect, to shelter, it also means screen.

- Yi | 倚 -

Yi and chair are homophones. Also, Yi means to rely on, to depend on.

- Lian | 帘 -

Lian,equal to curtain in English.

PINGLIAN

Pinglian, take the form of the screen and drape the elegant sense of the curtain. The rigid beech frame wraps from the drapery curtain, just as openness and privacy create harmony in conflict.

Modern people are in an era of information explosion, receiving extraneous messages in every moment from the outside world. In this case, to have a relatively independent private space is particularly valuable.
