Fresh Diary

Manage your food in an easier way.

Problem

Through literature review, I have following findings:

Globally, food waste is rising to 50 percent.

In China, over 200 billion Yuan’s (US$32 billion)worth of food is thrown away annually.

User Research

People's Experience About Food Management

After literature research, I conducted my research more in-depth into users' current food management experience. My target users are those people who need to purchased food on a regular basis, typically white-collar workers and housewives.

Let's Take a Journey about Food Management

Based on the previous findings, I found that food management didn't start at the fridge. Instead, it started when you thought about what to buy.

The two types of people behaved and thought a little differently, but their basic needs were similar. The main problems were the expiration date and where to store different food. Besides, some people often buy too much food. With these findings, we identified three key problems.

Things Make Food Management Annoyed

Purchase too much

"I don't plan my shopping list well. I just wander in the supermarket and buy foods don't on the list, especially when there is a discount, such as two-for-one."

Confusing expiration date

"The expiration dates of packaged foods are clear. But for vegetables or fruits, I really don't know when is the expiration date!"

Where is the right place to store

"Celery and cucumber are both vegetables. But celery should be stored in the fridge, cucumbers should be stored at room temperature. It's really a complex question."

These problems were what annoyed users the most in food management. They were also my opportunities and what should be solved in order to provide more delightful food management experience.

Ideation

Main Services of the Food Management System

After literature research, I conducted my research more in-depth into users' current food management experience. My target users are those people who need to purchased food on a regular basis, typically white-collar workers and housewives.

Purchase too much

1. Intelligent Memory and Suggestion

According to the quantity of food and the time span to eat up it, the system will give the user a suggestion about how much to buy and how often to buy next time. And the data are updated according to user habit.

Especially for the food you eat or drink every day, such as milk, juice, etc. (depends on individuals)

Confusing expiration date

2. Visualization and Reminder

Figuring out the expiration date of fruit or vegetable is hard, especially to green hand. The system will help users to know about the expiration date by visualization graphics.

Besides, it reminds you of the expiration dates of foods and alerts you before the expiration date.

Where is the right place to store

3. Tips to store food in the right place

Keeping food at the correct temperature can give a major boost to its lifespan.

Fresh Diary

fresh every day

With Fresh Diary, it would be much easier to manage food.

A simple, healthy life.

Add a New Item Quickly

One of the critical goals of the APP is to help users to add a new item quickly. Users can add food info in two ways: scan the barcode(for those packaged ones) and input manually(especially for fruits, vegetables).

After scanning the barcode with their phones, there is some necessary information(product name, expiration date, shelf life). Users can set a reminder, modify the quantity. Once users chose the category, the tips on "how to store" will automatically update.

Add Your Favorite Food to Wishlist

It's Your Special Shopping List

Fresh Diary will remind users when to repurchase food. For example, if it takes you four days to finish up a box of milk, it would suggest you buy milk every four days. And the reminder will automatically update according to your habit.
